Volunteer since 2012 (back in Hamilton)
Role - Driving standards observer
Ben has previously been a competitor relations officer and an assistant clerk of the course.
Why do you volunteer for Supercars?
I have been interested in motorsport since I was very young. I never had the opportunity to compete myself, so I volunteer instead – it’s the next best thing and gets me in the middle of the action. Also, it’s just great to be involved with the biggest motorsport competition in New Zealand and watching Kiwis dominate.
Do you have a favourite moment from being a volunteer?
Too much to choose from! I enjoy almost every moment of it, really.
Do you have a favourite moment from motorsport in Pukekohe?
My favourite moment was watching the crowd erupt when Scott McLaughlin won his very first V8SC race in 2013.
Ben’s top tips for Supercars!
What’s your number one tip for Supercars fans?
Get there early – the crowds always get bigger when the Kiwis have a great chance at winning. And dress for all four seasons! We’ve had race days when one half of the track is wet, and the other half is bone-dry. Typical Auckland weather!
What’s your favourite local spot?
Lone Star, definitely – it’s a Kiwi classic.
What’s an Auckland experience you would recommend to our out-of-town visitors?
The Sky Tower! It’s a ‘must-do’ for people new to Auckland.
Volunteer since 2004 (Pukekohe-based events only)
Role – Camp Mum (I look after bookings for campers)
Why do you volunteer for Supercars?
There is no official campground in Pukekohe, and limited accommodation, so I want to help campers have the best possible experience.
Do you have a favourite moment from being a volunteer?
The satisfaction of happy campers! All our campers are here for the one and only thing… “Supercars” They live and breathe racing and for them to be close to the action is just awesome. They can enjoy a full day at the racing, come back to camp to enjoy a cold beer and discuss the day with other likeminded campers.
Do you have a favourite moment from motorsport in Pukekohe?
I have never actually been to the Supercars in Pukekohe. I would love to attend one Sunday to see what it is all about.
Kim’s top tips for Supercars!
What’s your number one tip for Supercars fans?
Book your accommodation and racing tickets early and be prepared to enjoy!
What’s your favourite local spot?
Being a local to Pukekohe I have eaten at every eatery and had a drink at each bar. My most favourite would have to be The Monarch Cafe.
What’s an Auckland experience you would recommend to our out-of-town visitors?
Franklin area has so much to offer. When visitors are here they can make time to visit the surrounding areas – Glenbrook, Clarkes Beach, Miranda etc.
Volunteer since 2013
Role – Assembly Grid volunteer
Caitlin was previously a volunteer in the events team.
Why do you volunteer for Supercars?
Mostly because motorsport is what my family enjoys – there are three generations of us volunteering at the moment. On top of this, every event is exciting and you work alongside some amazing people.
Do you have a favourite moment from being a volunteer?
I work with a team of under 21’s who are all apart of Youth in Motorsport, so I have to admit there has been many weekends that capture some interesting moments. Choosing a favourite is just too difficult!
Do you have a favourite moment from motorsport in Pukekohe?
I have three:
-
Waving the Rear of Grid Green (RoGG) for Supercars.
-
Work alongside my family
-
Being able to work alongside some amazing women. It might be considered a ‘man’s sport’ but I have known many women who are helping me create my own path in this industry.
Caitlin’s top tips for Supercars!
What’s your number one tip for Supercars fans?
Definitely to try stand on the bridge while a class like Central Muscle Cars are on! It’s an experience worth having!
What’s your favourite local spot?
Pukeko’s Nest, Town Mouse and Pizza Box.
What’s an Auckland experience you would recommend to our out-of-town visitors?
Andy’s Burger Bar at SkyCity for their halloumi fries! The Sky Tower and city has to be done, plus Mission Bay and Piha.
